Key questions about working in New York City

What do New York firms offer?

The life of a New York lawyer is an exciting one. You will be working for the world’s biggest clients. In terms of career advancement, a position in New York will accelerate your career more quickly than a position anywhere else in the world. It goes without saying that you will be living in the world’s most exciting city. As an added incentive, the salary of a U.S. attorney is two to three times what you earn in Australia.

What Type of Attorneys are US firms looking for?

Corporate and Transactional attorneys are in the greatest demand. If you have experience at a top-tier firm working in Mergers & Acquisitions, Banking & Finance, Capital Markets, General Corporate Law or Project/Structured Finance there are numerous opportunities available.

What about the work visa?

It has never been easier for Australian lawyers to come to the United States. As a result of the American-Australian Free Trade Agreement, there are now 10,500 E3 visas available to Australian professionals on an annual basis. A letter of offer from an employer is all that is required to obtain one. These visas are valid for two years and are renewable indefinitely. If you obtain an E3 visa, your spouse will also have unrestricted working rights in the United States.

Do I have to sit the Bar?

It is not necessary to take the Bar exam to accept a position on the United States. It is likely that eventually you will need to obtain a license to practice in New York. In many cases, the law firm which hires you will help you through the bar exam. It is also possible to become licensed as a foreign qualified attorney.
