Susman Godfrey LLP on Monday announced an associate bonus scale that once again exceeds the market standard, offering bonuses more than double those at other BigLaw firms this year.
Susman Godfrey associates who graduated from law school in 2017 could come away with bonuses of $115,000, while its most senior associates could see $235,000, according to a statement from the firm. Last year, the firm's scale also topped out at $235,000, while most other firms have consistently offered $100,000 to senior associates.
More than 20% of Susman Godfrey associates see a total compensation of at least $500,000 for 2019, the firm said.
Earlier last week, high-profile trial boutique Wilkinson Walsh & Eskovitz announced that its associates could see bonuses that significantly exceed market-rate bonuses. The firm set its bonuses at 50% above the Milbank scale, starting at $22,500 for the associate class of 2018 and going up to $150,000 for eight- and nine-year associates.
Last year, Wigdor LLP, Selendy & Gay PLLC, Holwell Shuster & Goldberg LLP and Kaplan Hecker & Fink LLP joined Susman Godfrey in topping the standard scale. The move allows the boutiques to compete with larger and more established law firms for up-and-coming legal stars and clients, Michelle Fivel, a partner at recruiting firm Major Lindsey & Africa, told Law360 in January.
