It's official, the partners at Atlanta's No. 5 law firm Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP, and the U.K.'s Eversheds LLP voted to combine. Effective Feb. 1, the roughly 2,300-lawyer firm will be known as Eversheds Sutherland.
Legal Business notes Eversheds' threshold was two thirds of the partners who were eligible to vote, while in the US Sutherland only needed 50% of the partnership vote; and the combination will be an English company limited by guarantee and will not include financial integration between the two firms.
Of note, Eversheds tried to combine with Milwaukee's Foley & Lardner LLP last year but talks fell apart.
DeVane Tidwell, director of search firm Major, Lindsey & Africa's partner practice in Atlanta, had this to say: The merger elevates Atlanta's profile as a significant international legal market, reflective of the multinational companies that are either based here or have a significant presence here. It will cause international firms to more closely evaluate the deep legal talent in the Atlanta market.
