Between the Legal Lines — Jennifer Painter

Out of college, Jennifer Painter went into the military. She has carried the lessons she learned there with her through out her legal career. In this episode of Between the Legal Lines, Jen talks to Andrea Bricca about her time in the military and the variety of industries she worked in as an in-house lawyer, looking at how each of those experiences has shaped her and propelled her further along in her career.


Jennifer Hankes Painter
joined ASGN in June 2013 and is the Senior Vice President, Chief Legal Officer and Secretary focusing on legal and compliance issues affecting the company, including mergers and acquisitions, litigation, corporate governance and Board support. She joined ASGN after serving as general counsel, chief compliance officer and secretary of MRV Communications, Inc., a global provider of telecommunications equipment and services, from 2009 to 2013.

From 2004 through 2008, Jennifer served as vice president and assistant general counsel for The Ryland Group, Inc., a leading national homebuilder traded on the NYSE. From 2001 through 2004, she served as vice president and general counsel of Cadiz, Inc., a water and agricultural company traded on NASDAQ. Prior to joining Cadiz, Jennifer was employed as an associate with Sullivan & Cromwell LLP, an international law firm, where she dealt with mergers and acquisitions, securities, and other corporate matters. She was an officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers prior to her legal career.

Jennifer previously served as a member of the governing board and its management and budget committee for Meet Each Need with Dignity (MEND), a non-profit poverty center providing food, clothing, healthcare, job training and education. She received a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from the U.S. Military Academy, and a Juris Doctor from Loyola Law School of Los Angeles.
