Between the Legal Lines — Kate Karl

Many of us imagine that working for The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) must be days filled with puppy kisses and kitten cuddles. But Kate Karl does so much more than play with animals all day as the general counsel and chief legal officer for HSUS. In this episode of Between the Legal Lines, Kate chats with Andrea Bricca about what it is like to lead legal for a nonprofit and what she had learned while leading through a pandemic.


Katherine Karl
is the general counsel and chief legal officer of the Humane Society of the United States. She leads the Office of the General Counsel and the Animal Protection Litigation departments. She joined the HSUS from the American Cancer Society and was previously in a private practice where she advised a wide variety of tax-exempt organizations. Karl also served as a law clerk for a federal district court judge in the Southern District of New York. Before attending law school, she worked on Capitol Hill for a senior senator and the Senate’s Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.

Kate is a graduate of Cornell University and Yale Law School.
