Melissa Cohen is a Managing Director within our In-House Counsel Recruiting team where she specializes in placing attorneys at all levels within corporate legal departments throughout the Southeast. Using her past experience as a practicing attorney, Melissa combines her interpersonal skills with her industry knowledge to identify the right legal professional for the right roles. She does not believe in shortcuts, as there are none in the longevity of her career or the career of her placements. 

Building lasting relationships is the key to her success. Melissa strives to be a true partner to her clients, strategizing with legal and HR leaders about the use of outside counsel, compensation and department structure. She takes a holistic approach to each search, looking at how the hire will impact the legal team’s effectiveness and making suggestions based on the goals of her client and the organization.  

Melissa lives in Midtown with her husband, Sam, and mini Schnauzer, Tory. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with friends and family, trying new restaurants and enjoying all of Atlanta’s sporting events.

Melissa brings a combination of sales and legal experience to Major, Lindsey & Africa. Most recently, she served as a search consultant for Australia’s largest specialized legal recruitment agency that places law clerks to equity partners throughout Asia Pacific.

Prior to attending law school, Melissa worked on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., assisting a Congressman in drafting legislation into law. She then went on to work as a public defender for the 4th Judicial Circuit in Florida. Melissa appeared in various hearing for misdemeanors and felony cases and engaged in settlement negotiations.

Over the course of her recruiting career, Melissa has placed lawyers at all levels from staff counsel to general counsel at Fortune 500 companies, public companies and private equity–based organizations.

As a member of the Networking Committee with Victoria Women Lawyers, Melissa participated in various panel discussions speaking on numerous topics, such as women as partners, how to increase the numbers of female attorneys in-house and overcoming barriers to be successful in private practice.
