Law360 is proud to present a new series profiling the achievements of a select group of women in energy law, putting the spotlight on attorneys who are helping reshape an industry and practice area long perceived to be a man's world.

Law360 has selected 10 women who have made waves as energy regulators, litigators and dealmakers. We will profile these women every day, highlighting major energy policies they've crafted, billion-dollar deals they've brokered, and other accomplishments that have earned them a place on Law360's list of the 10 Influential Women in Energy Law:

  • Chris LaFollette, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP
  • Margaret Hill, Blank Rome LLP
  • Suedeen Kelly, Jenner & Block LLP
  • Joanne Katsantonis, McGuireWoods LLP
  • Jill Tauber, Earthjustice
  • Colette Honorable, Reed Smith LLP
  • Diana Liebmann, Haynes and Boone LLP
  • Anna Rotman, Kirkland & Ellis LLP
  • Melissa Raciti-Knapp, Freshfields
  • Elise Zoli, Jones Day

The energy industry has had a long-standing reputation as a boys' club, even compared with other industries. But the women on Law360's list have amassed major achievements in all corners of the energy industry, in both the public and private sector. It's a sign that times are changing.

"I think out of all industries, the energy industry has made the biggest push to dissolve the 'good old boys' network, or at least make it easier for women to get in,” said Leslie Goldman, a Houston-based managing director at Major Lindsey & Africa's in-house practice group. “Energy has come further than financial services, further than tech. They've been very intentional about it, because they knew their reputation."

And if law firms aren't going to do it on their own volition, they can expect to be pushed to diversify by the energy companies that hire them, according to Goldman.

"There's calls to action that are trying to get women who are making hiring decisions for outside counsel to demand more diversity,” Goldman said. “There's more of a push when you have more diversity in the C-suite."
