Asia Pacific Legal Market Summary and Partner Moves - October 2015

(As excerpted from our monthly Associate Newsletter - Asia Pacific)

Hong Kong                 China                 Singapore                 London                 Australia

HONG KONG

Over the last month, we have received a high number of requests to search for corporate, finance and dispute resolution lawyers. Most of the opportunities tend to be at the junior to mid-level. FCPA is another busy area. Associates with U.S. experience and Mandarin language skills remain in demand.

CHINA

We are seeing robust hiring activity for the fourth quarter in China. This is mostly on the replacement hiring side; international firms have been losing mid- to senior-level associates primarily to in-house job opportunities. With such urgent openings for associates with the right experience level and background, this could be a good time to "upgrade”"to the firm that can offer the best brand and future career prospects.

SINGAPORE

The Singapore recruitment market remains steady. We have seen a good amount of associates looking to move jobs; however, there are not many active openings available for them. Firms are taking an observatory approach on recruitment and are more likely to consider senior lawyers who are able to increase their current business activities. This trend may continue for the rest of the year.

LONDON

London has seen a sharp rise in corporate opportunities in the past few weeks, and whilst banking/finance remains buoyant, a few firms have put hiring on hold for their banking teams. We have also seen an increase in options in some of the mixed support/transactional practices including competition and IP.

AUSTRALIA

Domestically, the Australian market remains strong with opportunities in both corporate and projects & infrastructure practice areas. Dispute resolution, particularly financial services litigation, has been gaining momentum over the past couple of weeks with opportunities arising for associates at all levels. There continues to be a steady flow of corporate/commercial associates moving over to the firms in the U.S.
