Asia Pacific Legal Market Summary and Partner Moves - December 2016

(As excerpted from our monthly Associate Newsletter - Asia Pacific)

Hong Kong                 Singapore                 Australia

HONG KONG

Happy Holidays! The holiday spirit has started to kick in, but recruitment has not slowed down as a result. We have seen an uplift from previous months in recruitment, and firms are actively sourcing associates across the board. U.S. corporate practices are particularly busy, and a couple of top U.S. firms are interviewing junior to mid-level lawyers for their teams; Mandarin is very important for these roles. Finance and debt capital markets practices are hiring, too. Firms are keen to relocate the right talents to Hong Kong for these positions. We are expecting a busy end of the year.

SINGAPORE

The market in Singapore remains steady as firms look to 2017 to consider hiring budgets and plans. Now is the time of year that firms will take stock of pipelines, partners will consider which direction their practice will go and associates await bonus announcements. The overall outlook is positive and as Singapore develops, adapting to ever-changing market conditions in Asia. Firms are being smart to ensure their presence remains strong. We are starting to see an increase in hiring interest at some of the international firms, too, particularly in the finance space, which is a positive nod to next year.

AUSTRALIA

Reflecting on the last year, it certainly seems to have been a varied and dynamic year for the Australian legal market. The legal market has been exposed to the unexpected results in both Brexit and the recent U.S. election, the sudden entry of U.S.-based White & Case into Australia and international mergers of the likes of Dentons and Gadens. We have also seen the market in New York open further to Australian lawyers with the introduction of the E3 visa, creating more movement and opportunities for junior to mid-level transactional lawyers. With lots of activity and new opportunities for lawyers in the Australian market, it should make for a good end to the calendar year and an exciting start to 2017. Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday season!
