Asia Pacific Legal Market Summary and Partner Moves - May 2017

(As excerpted from our monthly Associate Newsletter - Asia Pacific)

Associate Newsletter – Asia Pacific is a monthly resource that reports current legal market news, trends, partner moves and active opportunities in the Asia Pacific legal markets.

Legal Market Summary

Hong Kong              Korea                 Singapore                 Australia

HONG KONG

UK law firms are beginning to release bonuses to lawyers in the coming months. This has created a rise in replacement positions in many firms due to associate movement. Firms are mainly recruiting across capital markets, dispute resolution, corporate and funds areas. The majority of these roles are available for associates with at least two years’ post-qualification experience. We have also noticed a few partner movements in the market, which we predict will lead to more recruitment at the associate level.

KOREA

We have recently seen an increase in opportunities for Korean-speaking associates in Seoul, particularly those with US qualifications. The market is still steady and there is some good work coming through at the international firms, although the regulations are still challenging for foreign lawyers. Other practice areas such as finance and arbitration in the international firms are not really hiring, so there still has to be long-term thinking if you are considering relocating to Seoul.

SINGAPORE

Singapore remains a steady, replacement-role focused market. Associates looking for a lateral move should network well and keep their ear to the ground. Generally, roles can be very competitive, but firms look for strong experience that matches with their requirements and a good academic profile. It is still common for associates to make a move from a local firm to an international firm and is still very much encouraged. The busiest areas in Singapore at the moment are finance and capital markets.

AUSTRALIA

The market in Australia appears steady and fairly active this month. Real estate needs across the market have seen a surge in demand with opportunities at all levels for those looking to make a move. International opportunities in London and New York are also very much open to Australian lawyers at the moment, particularly for anyone who has three or more years of general banking or leveraged finance experience.
