Asia Pacific Legal Market Summary(As excerpted from our monthly Associate Newsletter - Asia Pacific)

Associate Newsletter – Asia Pacific is a monthly resource that reports current legal market news, trends, partner moves and active opportunities in the Asia Pacific legal markets.

Legal Market Summary

Hong Kong              China                 Seoul                 Singapore

HONG KONG

Hong Kong is busy on both the finance and corporate sides. Offshore and international firms are looking to hire junior- to mid-level associates, so there are some good opportunities for generalists in these spaces. Likewise, those looking for more niche practices (such as private equity or funds) also have good options as we are working on specific searches in these areas.

Now is a good time for associates to look at the market as law firm budgets approach year end, and there is spending available for lateral recruitment.

CHINA

Beijing and Shanghai continues to be steady. Busy areas include IPO, M&A, IP and finance practices. Most of the hiring needs are replacement positions. Shanghai, specifically, remains busy in FCPA and M&A sectors. Firms are keen to look for candidates for growth reasons.

SEOUL

Seoul continues to be quite active towards the end of this year with a number of firms looking for mid-level US associates on the corporate side. There are some other niche areas looking to hire mid-level associates, too, including project finance. As always, strong BigLaw experience with US qualification is necessary.

SINGAPORE

Singapore has picked up on recruitment. Firms are mainly recruiting finance, capital markets and M&A sectors. Candidates with Hindi or Bahasa language skills and commonwealth qualification will have an advantage for some of the debt capital markets positions. The needs are available for junior to mid-level lawyers. Firms remains welcome to associates who are looking to return to Singapore after spending a few years in Australia, United States or London.
