CLIENT:

A $4.4 billion not-for-profit, regional healthcare system with a network of 10 hospitals and 20 other health-related businesses across Maryland, Washington, DC and Virginia.

PROBLEM:

Regulatory and ComplianceThe healthcare system needed to reduce spend on legal services in order to maintain a healthy balance sheet for its network of 10 hospitals and 20 other health-related businesses. Concurrently, it was experiencing unexpected attrition in its legal department during a reorganization that would move the Compliance Organization within the Legal Department, under the General Counsel responsibilities. These three factors led to three critical and highly-specialized open positions that needed to be filled almost immediately.

SOLUTION:

Major, Lindsey & Africa worked with its client to map out a solution that would meet both their short-term and long-term challenges. In the short-term, we immediately began searching for high quality, substantive contract attorneys that were attractively priced comparative to outside counsel, but still met the healthcare organization's highest standards for internal talent, culture and compliance. Our Solutions Practice Group used its deep candidate network to find top talent with the specific skill sets necessary to get the organization's legal department up and running at 100%. We identified three candidates within one to two weeks of completing the client's initial needs diagnosis – a Compliance officer, Transactional Counsel and Hospital Counsel – which matched the position requirements and highly specialized skill sets needed. The provided candidates were paid a rate that was 60-70% less expensive than the seconded resources the healthcare system was previously using from an AmLaw 100 firm, thus solving the need to reduce spend in a timely fashion.

SUCCESS:

All three Major, Lindsey & Africa candidates continue to work through the Solutions Practice Group at the client site and have a future possibility to convert to full time staff attorneys. Now that the relationship is established, the General Counsel has a trusted partner in place to map out a long-term vision for talent management, offering both interim and permanent staffing solutions for controlling costs and customizing how legal services are managed internally and externally.
