Hanover, MD (July 19, 2022) — Major, Lindsey & Africa (MLA), the world’s leading legal search firm, today announced the placement of Gabriel Steffens as general counsel at The Amherst Group (“Amherst”). The search was conducted by Dimitri Mastrocola, partner, Sheri Michaels, partner, and Eskor Edem, director, all with MLA’s In-House Counsel Recruiting group in New York.
Amherst is a leading real estate investment and advisory firm that is transforming the way real estate is created, owned, financed, and managed. Amherst leverages its proprietary data, analytics, technology, and decades of experience to seek solutions for a fragmented, slow-to-evolve real estate ecosystem and to materially improve the experience for residents, buyers, sellers, communities, and investors. The firm is headquartered in Austin, Texas, with offices across the U.S., including New York City, and oversees a portfolio of assets valued at ~$15 billion*.
Reporting to the chief executive officer, Sean Dobson, Gabe will oversee the legal and compliance functions at Amherst while acting as a senior legal advisor to the board of directors, chief executive officer, senior management, and other business leaders.
“We are delighted to have placed someone of Gabe’s caliber as Amherst's next general counsel,” said Dimitri Mastrocola. “He is a proven leader — smart, articulate and strategic — and his depth of experience in real estate transactions, investments and operations make him an ideal addition to Amherst’s executive team. His counsel will be instrumental as the company continues to execute on its growth strategy.”Gabe joins Amherst after spending 15+ years with Nuveen, a global real estate investment firm, where he served as head of legal, with growth and oversight of a business consummating in excess of $10 billion in investment activity per year. Prior to working for Nuveen, he was a corporate associate with O’Melveny & Myers LLP representing developers, operators and capital providers in numerous investment and corporate matters. Gabe started his legal career as an associate with Sullivan & Cromwell advising on M&A and securities offerings. He earned his J.D. from Cornell Law School and his B.A. from Miami University.
