MLA Has Been Retained by The Bezos Earth Fund to Recruit Its General Counsel

Hanover, MD (August 19, 2021) — Major, Lindsey & Africa (MLA) has been retained by the Bezos Earth Fund to recruit its general counsel. The Bezos Earth Fund was established to help address climate change and protect the natural world. Founded in 2020 by Jeff Bezos with a $10 billion philanthropic commitment, the largest philanthropic commitment ever made to fight climate change and protect nature, the Earth Fund is now building its team, strategy and portfolio of philanthropic work. The Earth Fund will deploy the full $10 billion by the end of this critical decade and aims to have the greatest impact possible with its resources.

The general counsel will oversee all internal and external legal matters for the Earth Fund and serve as the primary legal advisor to the senior leadership team. This critical role will work closely with other members of a growing team to help shape and build up the Earth Fund and its long-term strategy. The GC will facilitate the Earth Fund’s grantmaking, philanthropic activities and internal operations while assuring compliance with all applicable legal requirements related to the organization, including rules that apply to its tax status. This is an exciting opportunity to help make critical decisions of broad institutional significance, and in furtherance of the Earth Fund’s mission to address climate change and protect the natural world.

The search is being led by  Deborah Ben-Canaan, partner and senior practice leader for In-House Counsel Recruiting; Stephen Springer, partner, Partner Practice Group; and Edina Beasley, managing director, In-House Counsel Recruiting, all of MLA’s  Washington, D.C., office.
