MLA Places Georgia Vlamis as USG Corporation’s Newest General Counsel

Hanover, MD (June 8, 2020) — Major, Lindsey & Africa (MLA), the world’s leading legal search firm, today announced the placement of Georgia Vlamis as senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary at USG Corporation in Chicago. Georgia succeeds Mary Martin, who retired at the end of May. The search was led by Mindy Crandus Sircus, managing director with MLA’s In-House Counsel Recruiting group in Chicago.

Georgia will have full responsibility and accountability for all legal, compliance and regulatory matters of the company and its subsidiaries, as well as management of the company’s legal department. She will also serve on USG’s executive leadership team, providing counsel to the company’s chief executive officer, Christopher Griffin, and advice to its board of directors. Since 1902, USG has led the manufacturing industry with innovations and products that set new standards for design, productivity and performance for customers all over the globe. USG has operations in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

“Georgia is a bright, collaborative, engaging BigLaw-trained lawyer with extensive in-house experience, including as a public company general counsel,” said Mindy Crandus Sircus. “Her manufacturing background and overall skillset are strongly aligned with those sought by USG and she quickly rose to the top of a highly competitive candidate pool. I have no doubt that Georgia will hit the ground running and will be very successful at USG.”

Prior to joining USG, Georgia most recently served as vice president, general counsel, corporate secretary and human resources at FreightCar America, a publicly traded, leading builder of steel, stainless steel, aluminum and hybrid steel-aluminum freight cars. During her tenure, she oversaw litigation, compliance management, joint ventures, acquisitions and divestitures, compensation and talent development.  Georgia’s background also includes 20+ years of increasing legal leadership roles with Motorola, most recently serving as vice president, head of litigation. Before moving in-house, Georgia was a litigator with Wildman, Harrold, Allen & Dixon (now known as Edwards Wildman), where she made partner. She started her career as a litigation associate with Sidley & Austin.

Georgia earned her J.D. from DePaul College of Law and her B.S. from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
