Sarah Van Steenburg is a Managing Director in our Washington, D.C., office. She has extensive experience placing law firm associates, counsel, senior government lawyers and partners in global and national law firms.

Sarah is a strong advocate for diversity within the profession and workplace. She was a founding member of MLA’s Diversity Council and regularly speaks at law schools as well as local and national recruiting organizations on this topic and other areas regarding talent search, management and retention affecting the legal industry.

Five years ago, Sarah founded the Women of Color Attorneys group (WOC), a community composed of current and formerly practicing attorneys who are in the middle to senior phases of their careers.  This group is 200 attorneys strong and growing.  The WOC offers a safe space and forum for the particular personal and professional issues and obstacles facing women of color attorneys.  It seeks to build a community in a holistic way where women support each other and address their dreams and challenges with the ultimate goal of increasing women of color attorneys in leadership positions within law firms, in-house and the government.

Sarah splits her time between a farmette outside of Charlottesville, Virginia, and the Cleveland Park neighborhood of Washington, D.C. She has a passion for yoga, being outside and anything creative. She writes, paints and, along with her two rescue pups, fosters dogs in her spare time.

Sarah has advised, coached, recruited and placed top talent within the legal sector since 2002. Following a brief stint at a law firm, she fell into legal recruiting and enjoys the challenges and rewards of helping attorneys build their careers one opportunity at a time. She has worked in all facets of this sector from staffing to in-house to permanent placement and has been both a client and a vendor in the hiring process. This comprehensive experience allows Sarah to acutely understand the interests and concerns on both sides of the hiring equation. She is a cheerleader, therapist, trusted advisor and straight-talk advocate for both her candidates and clients forging strong relationships across the market that she leverages to create positive, long-lasting outcomes.
