MLA Places Gary Loeb as General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer at Intuitive Surgical, Inc.

Hanover, MD (November 3, 2022) — Major, Lindsey & Africa (MLA), the world’s leading legal search firm, today announced the placement of Gary Loeb as general counsel and chief compliance officer at Intuitive Surgical, Inc. in Sunnyvale, Ca. The search was conducted by Carol Warren Simon, partner, and Tam T.T. Pham, managing director, with MLA’s In-House Counsel Recruiting group in San Francisco.

Reporting directly to CEO Gary S. Guthart, Gary Loeb will oversee all legal, compliance and governance functions. He will serve as a critical senior legal advisor to the board of directors, CEO and other business leaders and will manage a global team of over 50 lawyers, paralegals and other professionals involved in setting precedent in case law, regulatory negotiations, industry association positions and trade issues.

Before joining Intuitive, Gary served as general counsel for Mammoth Biosciences, a private, research-stage company focused on novel CRISPR systems. Prior to Mammoth, he was executive vice president, general counsel, corporate secretary and chief compliance officer for the genomics medicine company, Sangamo Therapeutics. Gary’s background also includes public and private general counsel roles at Achaogen, Counsyl and Amyris, Inc. He also led intellectual property and litigation at Genentech. Gary started his legal career as a litigation associate focused on intellectual property law at Quinn, Emanuel, Urquhart & Oliver in Los Angeles. He received his J.D. from Columbia Law School and his B.S. in Biological Sciences from Stanford University.
