Hanover, MD (March 25, 2021) — Major, Lindsey & Africa (MLA), the world’s leading legal search firm, today announced the placement of Jay D. Meisel as general counsel at Greenpeace, in Washington, D.C.  The search was conducted by Nancy Reiner, partner, and Robert Mannino, director, in MLA’s In-House Counsel Recruiting group in Boston.

Jay will serve as a key member of Greenpeace’s strategic leadership team, overseeing organizational effectiveness, innovation, compliance and risk mitigation. He will direct outside counsel in litigation and advise on a wide range of matters with emphasis on nonprofit corporate and tax, employment, contract, campaign finance, intellectual property and environmental matters. Jay will be responsible for providing leadership and guidance on governance issues to the board of directors for both Greenpeace Inc., a 501(c)(4) entity and Greenpeace Fund, Inc., a 501(c) (3) entity.

Founded in 1971, Greenpeace is a global, independent campaigning organization that uses peaceful

protest and creative communication to expose global environmental problems and promote solutions that are essential to a green and peaceful future. For over 50 years, Greenpeace has fought to save the planet from the threat of global warming, destruction of ancient forests, deterioration of our oceans and the threat of a nuclear disaster which all loom large.

“Working with nonprofit groups and especially organizations that share my commitment to sustainability and to the environment has always been a rewarding part of my life at MLA,” said Nancy Reiner. “It was a true privilege to partner with the team at Greenpeace to help them find their next general counsel.” Bob Mannino added, “Jay Meisel will be a tremendous asset to the team and to the organization, and it is exciting to see him make this next step in his profession.”

Jay joins Greenpeace after 11 years with Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc., where he most recently served as vice president and interim general counsel for PPFA and the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. During his tenure, he oversaw the regulatory, transactional, risk management and governance functions for each organization. Prior to joining Planned Parenthood, he was a healthcare and privacy associate at Moses & Singer LLP.

Before attending law school, Jay was a development associate with the Appleseed Foundation and legislative assistant to then-Senator Joseph Biden, Jr. He received his undergraduate degree from the School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University and his law degree from the University of Virginia.
