MLA Places Daniel Stein, Former Chief of the Criminal Division in the SDNY, as a Partner in Mayer Brown’s Litigation & Dispute Resolution Practice

NEW YORK (November 14, 2016) — Major, Lindsey & Africa (MLA), the world's leading legal search firm, today announced the placement of Daniel Stein as a partner in the litigation and dispute resolution practice at Mayer Brown in New York. Mr. Stein will lead the firm's global regulatory and investigations group and co-lead its white collar defense and compliance group. The search was led by Jeffrey Liebster and Janet Markoff, partners at Major, Lindsey & Africa.

"We're pleased to have worked with Dan to complete his search," said Mr. Liebster. "Mayer Brown was focused and persistent in recruiting Dan and landed a highly sought-after partner by providing him with a unique and attractive opportunity."

Mr. Stein's decade-long career with the U.S. Attorney's Office in New York included two terms of duty. He first joined in 2003 and was chief of the public corruption unit from 2009 to 2011. He left to become a partner at Richards Kibbe & Orbe and returned to the Southern District in 2014 as chief counsel. He was named head of the criminal division in July 2015, where he supervised about 160 other prosecutors.

"When I began working with the Major, Lindsey & Africa team, we discussed finding an exceptional and unique opportunity at the right firm. I am pleased to share that every step of the way, the professionalism and quality of the representation and guidance I received was superb," said Mr. Stein, who earned his JD from Yale Law School and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Columbia University.

At Mayer Brown, Mr. Stein will focus his practice on representing and counseling financial services firms on regulatory and litigation matters, including securities enforcement, government and internal investigations, white collar criminal defense and complex civil litigation. He will counsel corporate and individual clients in a range of complex issues, including U.S. Securities Exchange Commission and Financial Industry Regulatory Authority investigations and enforcement actions.

"We are grateful to Major, Lindsey & Africa for its assistance in making this happen," said Rich Spehr, partner-in-charge of Mayer Brown's New York office. "Jeff and his colleagues were instrumental in helping bring Mayer Brown and Dan together because they really listened well to both sides, enabling and facilitating constructive communication through every stage of the process."

This is the latest of several recent placements of high-level attorneys following the conclusion of their government service facilitated by the Major, Lindsey & Africa teams in New York and Washington, D.C.
