MLA Places Hillary B. Smith as General Counsel at Square

NEW YORK (November 7, 2016) Major, Lindsey & Africa, the world's leading legal search firm, today announced that Hillary B. Smith has been placed as general counsel at Square, headquartered in San Francisco. Hillary brings to Square years of legal leadership experience at technology companies and has navigated complex legal and regulatory environments at the local, state and federal level. Reporting to CEO Jack Dorsey, Hillary will manage a team of more than 120 professionals and oversee the legal department as well as the government relations, compliance, and trust and safety teams.

"Hillary has the right blend of legal experience in the technology industry, plus the exceptional credibility and presence necessary to be a true business partner to a talented team of executives at Square," said Nicole Lipman, partner at Major, Lindsey & Africa, who led the search along with Jay Kim, managing director.

Hillary joins Square from Zenefits, where she was general counsel and corporate secretary since July 2015. Prior to this, Hillary was general counsel for SuccessFactors, Inc., a global public company until its acquisition by SAP for $3.4 billion in 2012. Following the acquisition, Hillary led the legal team supporting the cloud business at SAP. Before joining SuccessFactors in 2010, Hillary was the general counsel of Right Media, acquired by Yahoo Inc. in 2007, and Yahoo's associate general counsel supporting the company's global advertising products and businesses. Prior to this she was senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary of DoubleClick Inc. She began her career as a litigation associate a Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison in 1996. Hillary graduated from Cornell Law School in 1995, where she was editor-in-chief of the Cornell Law Review and a member of the Order of the Coif.

In 2012, Hillary was named one of the San Francisco Business Times' Most Influential Women in Business. She was also honored in 2014 by the New York County Lawyers' Association as one of the Outstanding Women of the Bar and has served as a member of the Federal Bar Council Inns of Court Project and Women in Digital Media.

Square was founded in 2009 and creates tools that help sellers of all sizes start, run, and grow their businesses. Square's point-of-sale service offers tools for every part of running a business, from accepting credit cards and tracking inventory, to real-time analytics and invoicing. Square also offers sellers financial and marketing services, including small business financing and customer engagement tools. Individuals can also use Square Cash, an easy way to send and receive money, as well as Caviar, a food delivery service for popular restaurants. Today, Square has offices in the United States, Canada, Japan, and Australia.
