A Conversation with Scott Willoughby

Scott Willoughby, GC at Sangamo Therapeutics, grew up knowing that he wanted to be a lawyer—maybe it was his argumentative nature—but to be sure, he took a year after undergrad to work in a law department to confirm that a career in the law was what he really wanted. In this episode of GCs in the House, Scott talks to Lina Guo about the legal career moves that he made and how his experience working in different industries equipped him with the skills needed to become a General Counsel.

Scott Willoughby
serves as Sangamo’s Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, acting as lead attorney for the company and advising the Chief Executive Officer, Board of Directors and other members of the executive leadership team on legal and business matters. He brings more than 20 years of expertise in senior legal and compliance roles at global public and private companies across multiple industries.

Scott joined Sangamo in March 2020 as Vice President and Head of Corporate Law and was promoted to the General Counsel role in 2021. Since joining the company, he has been an active member of the Senior Leadership Team where he has helped build and lead the legal, intellectual property and compliance functions. Prior to joining Sangamo, he served as Deputy General Counsel at Achaogen, a biotechnology company developing innovative antibiotics. Earlier in his career he held several senior counsel roles at large companies including McKesson and Uber Technologies as well as Latham & Watkins where he built his expertise in corporate governance, SEC reporting, corporate finance, compliance, M&A and complex transactions.

Scott received his B.A. and J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.
